NATURE STEWARDSHIP

“See it - Know it - Love it - Protect it” - Inge, FOHW Board Member

A two-story house under construction with boarded windows and no visible doors, surrounded by lush greenery and purple flowers in the foreground.

The Veblen House and Cottage

A gift from Oswald and Elizabeth Veblen. Oswald Veblen was a professor of Mathematics at Princeton University and helped organize the Institute for Advanced Studies. And, after Elizabeth Veblen's death in 1974, the house was donated to Mercer County with the expressed desire that it become a “nature museum and library.” Get involved with the restoration.

About The Veblen House
An outdoor garden scene with a mosaic-tiled table holding a chess set, a purple metal chair, and a stone pathway surrounded by lush green plants and trees.

The Barden

Our Botanical Art Garden. A blossoming example of what happens when creative people of all ages collaborate with nature to make art. We invite you to create with us.

About The Barden
A narrow stone pathway winds through a lush green forest with tall trees and dense foliage.

The Trails

The Yellow Trail traces Harry’s Brook. The Red Trail brings you all around the woods. Take the Orange Trail to the Veblen House. Explore until you know them all.

About The Trails
A police officer wearing a uniform and body camera, smiling, holding a small aquatic creature, possibly an octopus, in his gloved hand, against a dark background.

Salamanders

The Princeton Salamander Brigade is helping amphibians cross the road on “Big Nights” (mass migration nights).

About The Salamanders
A black informational sign attached to a tree with a rough bark texture. The sign reads 'Norway Spruce, Picea abies, Northern, central and eastern Europe. The Friends of Herrontown Woods.' It also features a stylized tree graphic and a QR code.

The Trees

Learn about our diverse community of 57 different tree species, around the Barden, the Veblen House, the Cottage, and the trails.
