Earth Day Celebration 2024! “Stewarding Your Local Environment”

In celebration of Earth Day, the Friends of Herrontown Woods & Princeton Public Library invite you to join us for a day of exploring and learning in nature. Walk, bike, or run over to the Woods!
(Rain date is Sunday, April, 21.)

9-11 AM | Flowers and Frogs Family Hikes, with local botanists Fairfax Hutter. Hike is moderate. Boots/galoshes recommended! Sign up below.

9 AM - 3 PM | May’s Café popup will be serving coffee, baked treats, and other fare through the day.

10AM - 12PM | “Valley of the Giants” Tree Walk, led by FOHW President, Steve Hiltner. Hike is moderate. Boots/galoshes recommended! Sign up below.

12 - 2 PM | Geology Walk with Professor Emeritus Lincoln Hollister, Professor Blair Schoene, and Dr. Laurel Goodell, all from Princeton University’s Geosciences Department. They will discuss the formation of the Princeton Ridge and its special rocks. This event has limited capacity. Sign up below.

12 - 1PM | Children’s walk through the woods with FOHW board memeber and local dad, Adrian Colarusso. Walk will end at the Veblen House, just in time for the Princeton Public Library’s Story Time. Boots/galoshes recommended! Sign up below.

1 PM | Children's Story Time with Princeton Public Library - up at Veblen House Gardens

10 AM - 3 PM | Visit local experts at hands-on display tables in the Botanical Art Garden (Barden) and near the Veblen House:

  • Princeton Public Library will lead outdoor activities include crafting and other hands-on, Earth Day-themed activities, including an Outdoor Storytime (storytime begins at 1PM).

  • Kids can make their own nature crown with Anne Louise Ennis from Tinkergarten (Nature Play NJ).

  • Start wildflower seeds and veggies crops with Mathilde Burlion of Grow Little Gardener.

  • Bike tune-ups and repairs in the main parking lot.

  • Make and take home your own herbal vinegars with Tish Streetan of Queen Mab’s Herbs using local plants and herbs from 10AM - 12PM.

  • Local mushroom foraging expert Dr. Philip Poniz will talk about mushrooms in this region.

  • Nature displays with the Littlebrook School PTO.

  • Flower-press artist Sophie Meunier, owner of Flore Organic Botanics, will demonstrate how she presses her flowers into art and she will be selling items from her beautiful botanical art collections.

  • Hear about our spring amphibian crossing brigade that helped our local critters cross busy Herrontown Road to vernal pools

  • Sample Spicebush Tea from the woods

  • Learn about local invasive species from local experts, and perhaps join the newly formed, relaxed and friendly "Invasive Species of the Month Club!"

  • And more fun activities….

Parking: Bike racks will be available next to the Barden. For cars, please park at Smoyer Park across the street from the Herrontown Woods. There is very limited onsite parking at the main parking lot, next to the Barden and near Veblen House and we need to ensure emergency access.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO ASSIST THROUGHOUT THE DAY!

For all walks and hikes: Please wear sturdy shoes/boots. The trails may be muddy in spots. We will meet at the main parking lot at the end of Snowden Lane, by the kiosk. (Drivers, we encourage you to park at Smoyer Park and walk down [map].)
