The Trails
The Trails of Herrontown Woods
Over three miles of trails meander and criss-cross through the dense, diverse growth of this 100-acre preserve. (When counting the adjacent Autumn Hill Reservation and All Saints preserves, the total contiguous open space is over 200 acres!) Its varied terrain includes massive boulders covered in moss and lichen, a pristine tributary of our local watershed known as Harry’s Brook, Christmas ferns and other native flora lining the paths, and a small cliff hidden off the Red Trail.
The trails guide you into an enchanting woodland that attunes your senses and uplifts your spirit. You’ll find yourself quickly transported far from the hustle and bustle of Nassau Street, which is fewer than two miles away as the crow flies.
Around 2013, the Herrontown Woods trail system was rendered all but impassible after years of neglect, made worse by Hurricane Sandy. That year, the Friends of Herrontown Woods was founded by a small but dedicated group of volunteers who heroically cleared the trails.
We believe access to nature is a fundamental human need (and right). Why do we work hard to preserve these trails and invite everyone to enjoy them? We know when people spend time in nature—especially among trees—it creates a happier, healthier community.
