LAND STEWARD AT HERRONTOWN WOODS

The Friends of Herrontown Woods (FOHW) is a community organization that manages 220 acres of preserved open space in Princeton, New Jersey, for the enjoyment of the public and to protect habitat. As a volunteer-led, nonprofit organization, we build and maintain trails and host events that bring music, art, theater, history, and education into the woods, to foster creative engagement with nature and with our community. Our activities inspire people to transform their approach to conservation and start working collectively towards a more sustainable future.

The Friends of Herrontown Woods (FOHW)  is seeking a Land Steward who is passionate about protecting and caring for open space, enjoys working with plants and people, and has excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. This is a PART-TIME, PAID INTERN POSITION. Current college students and recent grads are particularly encouraged to apply. 

Responsibilities

  • Trail maintenance and improvement

  • Invasive species management

  • Native plant management and protection

  • Assist in developing and managing a volunteer stewardship program.

  • Support various activities taking place on the reserve, including maintenance of the Botanical Art Garden, youth gardening programs, workshops, cultural events, and nature walks.

Types of Tasks

  • Recruit, train, and manage volunteers

  • Trail maintenance

  • Remove invasive species

  • Weeding, planting, and collecting seeds in the botanical art garden

  • Maintain three raingardens

  • Setting and cleaning up before and after events

  • Checking in guests at events

  • Assisting with local environmental education projects 

  • Carpentry work if applicable

  • Weeding, raking, sweeping around the buildings

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Interest in gaining hands-on experience in environmental projects working outdoors

  • Plant knowledge is a plus

  • Experience in volunteering, recruitment, and volunteer management preferred

  • Excellent verbal and written, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Leadership, organizational, and team-building skills

  • Working knowledge of databases and MS Office (especially Excel) 

Pay Range: $16-$20/hour based on experience.  10-20 hours of work per week. 

Start Date: Flexible start date according to candidate’s availability. Funding for an initial 250 hours, with potential for extension through fall and winter.
