Helping Amphibians Get to the Other Side of The Road

  • Know it.

After hibernating all winter, frogs and salamanders typically wake on the first few warmer rainy evenings of spring. After awakening, with urgency they travel back to the same pool where they were born to lay their eggs. And if a road is in their path, they must cross it.

  • Love it.

The Princeton Salamander Brigade is helping amphibians cross the road on “Big Nights” (mass migration nights).

  • Protect it.

In 2024, the Princeton Salamander Crossing Brigade logged 270 attempted road crossings of salamander and frogs (over five mass migration nights). 161 amphibians were safely transported. Sadly, even with our help, 109 (40%) were DOR (“dead on road”). Losing 40% of amphibians each year will decimate these keystone species. They need more help!
