This January 26th will mark the 50th year since Elizabeth “May” Veblen’s passing, and the adding of Veblen House to the public trust. Many may not know that May’s Café’s namesake is Elizabeth Veblen, who was known to those close to her as “May.” She started the tradition of serving afternoon tea at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), where her husband, Oswald Veblen, was one of the first Faculty of the IAS, when it was housed in Fine Hall at Princeton University. The tradition continued once the IAS moved to its permanent location. It is said that Einstein’s theory about quantum entanglement was first discussed at an IAS afternoon tea!
Join us this Sunday as we remember Elizabeth “May” Veblen, her legacy of conservation, and her love of Herrontown Woods at “May’s Café”! We will have photos of May to share and teatime treats with freshly brewed coffee, and freshly brewed Lapsang Souchong tea - a special smoky tea that was said to be one of Elizabeth’s favorites.
May’s Café is in the Barden area of the Woods.
Weather permitting, of course! Dress warm - it may be windy!
